The Young Adult Version of the Expanded MBA Inventory
This Young Adult version of the MBA Inventory has been developed specifically for use with team members who are in their twenties and late teens.

Are you struggling to keep your younger employees?
Turnover is one of the most common challenges when employing those under 30. Paying them more won’t solve the problem. Younger generations of workers have different values than prior generations – they want to be seen as a “whole person,” not just a “production unit.” They want to be treated with respect and feel “seen” – that their opinion and viewpoint matters. They also want time flexibility and to have a sense of purpose in their work. But sometimes it is difficult to meet all of their expectations.
Connect with your newer team members.
While young adults are more connected to the world through technology than ever, research shows that they are lonelier and personally disconnected from others than any other generation. They need to have a sense of connection and affirmation from those they work with. The MBA Inventory is a simple, inexpensive tool that gives you the means to better understand your employees, help them connect with one another at a personal level, and – as a result – remain with you longer.
Learn what is important to team members:
By having your team take the Motivating By Appreciation Inventory, you will:
- Identify the primary and secondary languages of appreciation for each person
- Give them the opportunity to tell you what specific actions are important to them
- Learn how they don’t want to be shown appreciation
- Help them learn how to show appreciation to one another
Understand Generational Differences:
- Quality time for young adults is more about time with peers
- Work/life balance is a core value, therefore flexible scheduling is desired
- Earning comp time to take off is valued more than a gift
- Young employees want to have their input considered

Designed Just for Them
We learned that our standard version of the inventory seemed designed for “older folks” – in the way it was worded, the way the questions were worded, and the appreciation actions to choose from. So, we did research with focus groups of twenty-somethings and older teens to get feedback and suggestions from them. As a result, we created this newly worded version based on their input – and younger employees like it!
Facilitating Peer Interactions
Even though you may be the supervisor or manager of a team including younger adults, don’t be offended if they want to get together and do something social without you. Their focus is on peer relationships more than getting time to talk with their supervisor, or older colleagues. As a result, it will be good to consider different ways you can facilitate informal interactions with their same-age colleagues – such as going out to lunch together (or ordering lunch in), going to a sports bar to watch a game, taking an afternoon break and going to getting a snack together, planning an extra-long lunch hour and playing a game. Learn specifically how your younger team members would like to connect with each other by having them taking the MBA Inventory.
